The growing population of IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) patients in China as well as in other Asia-Pacific countries has placed a huge burden on the local medical care systems. Academic research and clinical diagnosis of IBD are in want of a methodological transition from the emulation of global studies into standardized and individualized treatments befitting the local conditions. Besides, international division of labor, cooperation and academic diversity are called for in IBD fields.

Therefore, in order to promote the international competence of the prestigious IBD center of the University of Chicago, to provide a platform for Chinese clinicians to actively anticipate in international academic cooperation and division, to confront worldwide difficulties and disputes in IBD clinical practice, the 2017 Oriental Inflammatory Bowel Disease Forum and the Second Shanghai-Chicago Inflammatory Bowel Disease Forum took place in Pullman Shanghai South Hotel, from May 26, 2017 to May 28, 2017, held by the University of Chicago Center in Beijing, Beijing Medical Award Foundation, Department of Gastroenterology of Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, Shanghai Institute of Digestive Diseases, and Shanghai Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research Center.

We were honored to have invited Drs. David T. Rubin, Russell D. Cohen, and Neil H. Hyman from IBD center, the University of Chicago, Professor Siew C. Ng from CUHK (Chinese University of Hong Kong), and local prominent IBD experts and professors to the forum — a precious opportunity for high-level crosstalk between China and the rest of the world in the area of IBD diagnosis and treatment and to analyze frequently debated issues in the current IBD field. Thanks to this forum, IBD researchers around the world enter a new area where opportunities and challenges coexist. The forum has successfully ignited the collaborative interaction and thinking collisions among multiple IBD research centers worldwide, and the forum turns out to be the best incubator that exists for the sharing of ideas among IBD experts. During this forum, multidisplinary team (MDT) hosted by Professor Rubin, Professor Cohen from the university of Chicago, and Professor Qian Jiaming, the leading professor in Chinese IBD field and Professor Ran Zhihua, has received general appreciation.

Professor Rubin talked about "the role of biosimilars in inflammatory bowel disease", shedding light on the future development of IBD treatment and strategies of relieving the financial burden caused by IBD treatment in developing countries; Professor Cohen's speech "what to do when biologic agents are not working in inflammatory bowel disease patients", provided several remedy options when the traditional therapies failed. In Professor Hymen's speech "Complications after ostomy surgery in Crohn's disease patients", he offered some solutions to the difficulties in IBD surgical management.

The forum attracted approximately 250 Chinese top-experts. Broadcast live and interviewed by multiple news outlets, the forum greatly enlarged the influence of the IBD center of the University of Chicago.
